UoE discontinues double degree programme
Lahore: The University of Education (UoE) has announced that the double degree programme based on master’s and graduation level in science and arts is being discontinued from academic year 2011 beginning from September this year.

The decision has been taken on the instructions of the Higher Education Commission.

Announcing this decision, UoE Registrar Bashir Ahmad Chaudhry said the one-year B.Ed and M.Ed programme would continue as per HEC policy. He said the university would issue two degrees to students who would seek admission to double degree programme of spring session 2011 and fall 2010. He said the degrees of students of 2004-05 and 2005-06 sessions would be considered equivalent to the 14-year BSc degree. A list of graduates who had obtained these degrees was being sent to the HEC so that they do not face any problems in future. It may be mentioned that a meeting of HEC officials and UoE management was held in February to discuss the double degree issue. Former acting vice-chancellor Prof Dr Farhat Saleem, QEC director Dr Saeed Akhter, Division of Arts and Social Sciences director Dr Muzaffar Abbas and other senior faculty members informed HEC officials about degree programmes of the university as well as planned programmes.

HEC Executive Director Dr Sohail Naqvi and other commission officials had approved the commencement of four-year B.Ed (Honours) Programme and Associate Degree in Education (ADE).

Moreover, the HEC had suggested direct admission to M.Phil and PhD. The officials had ordered discontinuation of M.Phil leading to PhD programme. Dawn
