Six police officers hurt in riot

Six police officers have been hurt in rioting in County Antrim overnight.

The trouble in Ballyclare started just before midnight, when a crowd of 70 to 100 people attacked police with petrol bombs and missiles.

Five officers were hurt when a hijacked bus was crashed into a police vehicle. Police fired baton rounds and used water cannon to disperse the rioters.

It is believed loyalists were behind the trouble, in the Doagh Road and Grange Estate areas.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said the force was advising motorists to avoid the area.

There was quiet by about 0400 BST on Sunday, although further trouble was reported in the nearby areas of Carrickfergus and Newtonabbey.
