POGEE 2010

POGEE 2010

8th International Exhibition for the Energy Industry
(19 – 22 May 2010)

INTRODUCTION

Pakistan with an ideal geographic and strategic location serves as a corridor for the international supply routes of energy. Being a regional power house, the country possess opportunities of setting up the oil and gas pipelines as well as electricity grids within the region and with other neighbouring energy rich countries such as Iran, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Pakistan’s energy requirements are increasing every year and to meet the rising demand of energy, the government of Pakistan is currently focused on diversification of gas supplies, reconstruction of hydropower plants, construction of underground gas storage facilities, development of oil exploration & production, tapping of renewable energy resources, attracting foreign investment and privatisation of state-owned assets.

Pakistan is responding to the energy development challenge by pursuing a wide range of domestic and imported energy projects and in the year 2008 – 2009, the Oil, Gas and Energy industry has attracted Foreign Investment of about US$ 796 million.

OIL & GAS INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

The location of Pakistan at the crossroads of Central Asia and the Arabian Sea has brought into spotlight its significance as an attractive market and a regional transit route for energy. Oil and Gas are the two major components of the energy mix which contribute 79% to the 63 million TOE of energy requirement in the country. The Government is formulating investor-friendly policies to increase the share of indigenous resources in the country. As a result of these policies, the Oil & Gas sector has attracted foreign direct investment of over US$ 700 million in 2008-09.

Pakistan is one of the largest consumers of gas in the region. It has a well developed and integrated infrastructure of transportation, distribution and utilisation of natural gas with 10,285 km of transmission and 93,961 km of distribution network. The two gas distribution companies plan to invest about US$ 400 million to increase the capacity of existing distribution network.

Up till now 725 wells have been drilled by various local and international exploration and production companies with 219 Oil & Gas discoveries, bringing the gas reserves to 30 TCF. An investment of US$ 1 billion was spent in drilling activities with 60 new wells drilled in 2008-09. At the same time, the crude oil recoverable reserves are estimated at 313 million barrels. The current production of oil is 66,532 barrels per day, whereas gas production is at 4 billion cubic feet per day.

Currently seven refineries are operating in the country with a refining capacity of 13 million tonnes per year.

Pakistan is now the largest CNG user in the world. Currently, 2700 CNG stations are operating with an investment of over US$ 1 billion, serving 2 million vehicles in the country.

LPG

LPG is environment-friendly and an economical fossil fuel available in the country. It is mainly used by the people living in remote areas, having no access to natural gas. Annual LPG consumption is 600,000 tonnes out of which 20% is met through imports. Total investment of US$ 200 million has already been made to develop the LPG supply infrastructure.

COAL

Pakistan has the 7th largest coal reserves in the world, estimated at over 185 billion tonnes of Coal. The country is producing 2.4 million tonnes of coal to meet the current coal consumption of 6.4 million tonnes while 4 million tonnes is imported to fulfill the energy requirement of the country. The Government has allocated an annual budget of US$ 25 million for the development of Thar Coal Infrastructure. Thar Coal project has the potential to cater to the increasing national energy requirement for decades with a relatively low unit cost.

THE SHOW – OIL & GAS PAKISTAN

Oil & Gas Pakistan is geared to be an exclusive trade exhibition, showcasing state-of-the-art equipment and machinery providing its participants with a comprehensive technical insight into the regional Oil & Gas industry.

POGEE, featuring Oil & Gas Pakistan and Power Technology Pakistan exhibitions, has established itself as the premier event catering to the Oil, Gas & Energy sectors. It serves as a convergence point for national and international companies to explore business opportunities in Pakistan . With unprecedented experience and reach, POGEE is the ideal venue to interact with key decision-makers and government officials, discuss areas of mutual cooperation, implement government plans and fulfill the future requirements of this industry in Pakistan.

Clearly, these results show a strong confidence of players, both local and foreign, in the resilience of Pakistan’s economy amidst a series of domestic and external events of an unprecedented nature.

This impressive performance in the economy says so much about the structural economic policies that the Government of Pakistan has outlined and pursued relentlessly in order to restore macroeconomic balance and to improve the overall economic environment. Through prudent fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies, financial discipline and consistent and transparent economic policies, a wide range of reforms was introduced in the areas of taxation, trade and tariffs, banking and finance, industry and agriculture, deregulation and privatization, fiscal transparency and governance. Indeed, they know their business more than anyone else. These efforts gained the interest of world industry leaders especially on the sectors of textile, machinery and transport equipment, food technology, minerals and lubricants, chemicals and manufactured goods like plastic, packaging and printing.

ITCN Asia 2010

ABOUT ITCN ASIA – Growth from a country event to a regional event

From its inception in 2001, ITCN Asia, now being organized for the 10th consecutive year, has grown up as the biggest IT & Telecom extravaganza of Pakistan. Most powerful brands of the world will showcase their state-of-the-art products and services which would allow the user community to get exposure to a wide range of technology and solutions under one roof. Most importantly, it would provide an opportunity for business-to-business alliances, leveraging their mutual strengths. ITCN Asia Exhibitions & Conferences have been playing a pivotal role in landmarking the image of Pakistan on the world IT Map, bringing in huge foreign and local investments in the Country.

Over the years ITCN Asia has grown from a country event to a regional event. Just a few years ago there were very few companies with quality certifications. Today, we have over 100 ISO certified companies, the thrust on quality was continued with two new projects targeted to take five companies to CMM level 5 and 30 companies to CMMi level 3 and above.

// In addition to Quality certifications and standardization processes, the industry requires Human Resource, Space and Bandwidth. We have an approved Public Sector Development project under which training programs, tailored to the specific needs of the Industry, are implemented by the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB). In addition to this, several other HR development programs are planned through the Telecom R&D Fund, where existing IT graduates are provided opportunity to seek apprenticeship and become more productive. Higher Education Commission created stronger Industry-Academia linkages and took other steps so that the quality of fresh graduates was improved.

Software Technology Parks (STPs) are being set up in all the major cities. In Islamabad one International Technology Park (ITP)is already in operation in Awami Markaz, while land has already been earmarked for other STPs. In Lahore, certain areas have been identified and are being finalized. In Karachi an ITP is already in operation in Caesar Tower, while, land has been acquired opposite Civic Centre for a 47 storey high IT Tower, where construction would commence soon. On the bandwidth front, until very recently, there was only a single optic fiber cable for International connectivity. Today, we have 3 separate submarine cables for International connectivity. This will provide the much needed resilience to our data networks.

// ITCN Asia 2010 Exhibition is, where you will see newer & latest technologies and solutions in action. It is the foremost electronic business event for the enterprise decision makers in this region. Spanning 3 days on 3 – 5 August 2010, the Exhibition at Karachi Expo Centre, forms the core of IT Industry of the world. Capt. Dr. Abdul Majid, Special Secretary, Public Health, Sindh, on the occasion said that, Health ASIA is the leading and only UFI (Paris) Approved, Regional Event on Health & Pharmaceutical Industry of Pakistan on the national calendar, which provides enormous opportunities of learning, Information sharing, mutual cooperation and combined ventures to all the stakeholders in the Asian Health sector. He said that although Pakistan’s Pharmaceutical and Health Care sectors are expanding and evolving rapidly, about half the population still has no access to awareness of general health Care & modern technology. This presents a challenge and an opportunity to the government. This conference and other such efforts on public/private level, therefore play a role to provide a platform where health Industry Professionals, Doctors, Health Insurers, and other stakeholders will exchange views, highlight problems & present ideas and strategies for future development of this sector.

The Chief Guest further added that, every part of the health care system must be involved with a strong commitment at providing a compassionate, ethical and accessible general and specialized care to the community with respect towards patients and their families.

On the occasion, Salman Burney, MD GlaxoSmithKline, said that Pakistan has a very vibrant and forward looking Pharma Industry. The National pharma industry has shown a progressive growth over the years, particularly over the last one decade. The industry has invested substantially to upgrade itself in the last few years and today the majority industry is following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), in accordance with the domestic as well as international Guidance. Currently the industry has the capacity to manufacture a variety of product ranging from simple pills to sophisticated Biotech, Oncology and Value Added Generic compounds.

Dr. Sarmad Maqbool, Abbott Laboratories Pakistan, Dr. Asima Zahid, Health Sciences, Institute of Business Management, Ali Haider, Asst. GM, Health Insurance, Adamjee Insurance Company Ltd., also highlighted the point that Health care is becoming the industry of the future as the world’s population lives longer. Until recently, investors focused on aging trends in developed economies, where life expectancies were generally higher and household incomes were sufficient to support health care spending.National public health is a recent innovation in Pakistan. Improvements in health care have been hampered by scarce resources and are difficult to coordinate nationally because health care remains a provincial responsibility rather than a central government one. Until the early 1980s, local governing bodies were in charge of health services.

The speakers stressed that the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Industry is a success story, providing high quality essential drugs at affordable prices to Millions. Technologically, strong and self reliant National Pharmaceutical Industry is not only playing a key role in promoting and sustaining development in the vital field of medicine within the country, but is also well set to take on the international markets. But in the given circumstances this industry needs strong support by the government and relieve on various fronts as that of manufacturing & exports.

Its worth mentioning, that Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan has come a long way and Health Asia, Int’l Conference & Exhibition, since its inception, has been serving as a regional forum for deliberations to the local and foreign investors, industrialists, academia, and entrepreneurs.
